Divine Comedy - Victory for the Comic Muse

To say that any Divine Comedy album feels overly calculated is somewhat pointless, given that Neil Hannon's cheeky musical alter ego is a nostalgic figure caught in a 1930s time warp to begin with. It's all about affection, as it were. But Victory for the Comic Muse is almost mathematical in its calculation: open with a jaunty number to get the audience excited; slow it down for four consecutive reflective ballads to suggest maturity; split the album in half with a throwaway piano instrumental like an old movie intermission; inject some life into the proceedings with four sprightly, comic selections; and close with a tearjerker.

Anticon label members Themselves (Adam "Doseone" Drucker, Jerry "Jel" Logan, Dax Pierson) and Germany's the Notwist (Markus Acher, Micha Acher, Martin Gretschmann, Martin Messerschmid) have never been strangers to genre-exploring collaboration (Doseone's involvement in Subtle and cLOUDDEAD, the Acher brothers in Village of Savoonga, and Gretschmann's work as Console), and the idea of creating a record together had been brewing for some time in the minds of Themselves, who had been listening to the Notwist's Neon Golden during their European tour. Martin Gretschmann, the Notwist's programmer and keyboardist, was in the audience at a Themselves show in Munich, and a joint tour was informally arranged. 13 & God were spawned during the last of many bus breakdowns during this tour, and in September 2004, after months of sending demos back and forth, the two groups united in Munich and spent 17 days there, recording 13 & God's self-titled debut in Micha Acher's Transistor Studios.

Herzog - Androgenius

The band was formed in 2002 in Vladivostok, Russia by members of several famous local bands. Keeping the best parts left from the past - raw immediacy of sound, competent arrangements, vivid imaginery of the poetry - Herzog moved on to explore a bit different sonic plateaus. By using the most up-to-date sound editing software, Herzog applies a soubtle touches of electronica to his mostly traditional rock songs. The result is quite unlike anything that can be found on contemporary Russian rock scene - a literary, inventive and moving music that sounds classic and unabashedly modern at the same time. Think of Teitur or Sondre Lerche if they would have been more fond of Element Of Crime. And take notice.

Tsunami- A Brilliant Mistake

Tsunami's records are usually excellent, but on The Brilliant Mistake, Tsunami has truly reached their apex. This stroke of brilliance corresponds to the tragic end of the band's Simple Machines label after seven years of near-flawless production and indie rock mining. The band's earlier attempts at punk rock were often tedious at best, but with these 13 songs, they put aside their punk ambitions and create their cleanest, most cohesive record to date. On "Old Gray Mare," singer Jenny Toomey croons about the metaphorical, while two songs later, pulsing horns accompany her as she wails about struggling against the grain of mainstream society.

"There's something quite chilling and compulsive about the original model of Ultravox. Sure, lots of people were experimenting with synthesizers, but Ultravox married that sound to elements of glam rock and punk to produce a more affecting hybrid. You can feel the ghosts of Kraftwerk at play here, even more strongly than on the band's debut -- and that's saying something. Twenty years on, some of it does sound a little corny; however, the album does include the one undeniable classic of early-period Ultravox: "Hiroshima Mon Amour."

РЕЙТИНГ: ffff

Небрежный и талантливый винегрет из различных стилей - англоязычный альбом группы КАРАМАЗОФФ БАЙК 1996 года. Мрачный, грязный и разнородный, от точеного "Карамазофф Байка" 1998 года в нем только интеллигентная непринужденность. Это не продукт, это издевательство. Непонятно, кому он нужен. Потрясающе динамичен. Пронзительно интересен.


Немного фактов:
Пластинка записана за 28 часов в январе 1994 года в студии фирмы грамзаписи "Мелодия", которая располагалась в то время в здании церкви св. Екатерины (СПб).
Звукорежиссер записи - легендарный Юрий Морозов (Царствие ему Небесное).
Запись должна была издаваться на виниле лейблом "Паутина Рекордз" в 1994 году, однако этого не случилось.
В итоге пластинка увидела свет в 1996 году уже в формате CD, выпуск которого был приурочен к международному фестивалю "ВладиРокСток", где Карамазофф Байк выступили на одной сцене с американскими группами Goodness и Supersuckers.
